In the early morning of June 24, 2021, in the city of Surfside, the Champlain Tower South Condominium partially collapsed, waking residents of North Miami Beach, Florida. Becoming the deadliest collapse in the history of the United States. The rescue teams helped some residents of the part that remained standing, there were no survivors in the collapsed part of the building. Week and a half later a tropical storm threatened to reach the peninsula. The authorities proceeded to completely demolish the fragile remaining structure of the building because, in addition to putting the lives of the rescuers at risk, it hindered the rescue efforts of the bodies. Three years earlier, a report from an engineering office warned of serious structural problems in the thirteen-story building built in 1981. Once the bodies of the 98 victims had been recovered and the rubble removed, work on the site was completed. In October 2022, a judge approved a contract to sell the land where the Champlain Towers South building was located for $120 million as the minimum price for a public auction. The causes of the collapse have not yet been determined exactly.
